Forecast Rundate:
The CariCOOS Puerto Rico Operational Regional Ocean Modeling System (PRO-ROMS) is a high resolution coastal ocean model, with a 1.11km (1/100 deg) horizontally uniform grid and 32 terrain-following levels. The system runs daily providing a three day forecast of ocean currents, temperature and salinity distributions in the coastal areas of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The operational model relies on the AmSeas NCOM model for initial and boundary conditions as well as sea surface temperature, shortwave radiation flux, surface net heat flux and net freshwater flux at the model ocean-atmosphere interface. The wind stress field at the surface is a function of wind velocities extracted from the National Digital Forecast Database (NWS-NDFD), using a constant sea surface roughness. The model is tidally forced using the OTPS software package.
